It just dawned upon me. Why he did not need religion or rituals or traditions or culture. Not because he was rebelling nor because he did not have faith; it was simply because he did not need an external frame of reference anymore. He did not need anyone or anything to tell him what to do anymore.
He had discovered his internal source of reference - his own self. And in discovering that, he did not need God or any religion or any dictates or advice.
His spirit told him which path to choose, which turn to follow. And in subservience to his spirit, he found his freedom and peace !!!
